The performance and metabolic behaviour of grazing lambs supplemented with Morus alba (M) and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (T) were evaluated. A total of 32 male crossbreeding lambs (Pelibuey x Dorper or Black Belly) with an average body weight of 18.33±1.56 k were studied during 90 days. The animals were allowed to graze continuously and were supplemented (300 g animal-1 d-1) in the afternoons according to the following eight treatments: only grazing (P), P + concentrate (P + C), P + M 60 days old (P + M60), P + M 90 days old (P + M90), P + M 120 days old (P + M120), P + T 60 days old (P + T60), P + T 90 days old (P + T90) and P + T 120 days old (P + T120). Data were recorded for supplement intake (SI), forage intake (FI), daily weight gain (DWG), pH, and the concentration of N-NH3 and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Total bacteria (TB) and protozoan (PR) populations were measured in rumen fluid samples. Data were statistically analysed with a complete randomised design, and Tukey?s test was used to compare means. P + C and P + T60 significantly improved (p <0.05) the SI. P evidenced the greatest (p <0.05) FI. The P + C and P + T90 treatments increased DWG, whereas P + M90 produced the lowest DWG. Variations in pH and N-NH3 were not significant among treatments (p>0.05). However, P + M60 and P + M90 increased (p <0.05) total VFA production. The P + C treatment increased (p <0.05) TB and PR concentrations. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of each treatment on the evaluated variables, the use of white mulberry M. alba and chinese hibiscus H. rosa-sinesis harvested at 60 and 90 d respectively, is suggested as supplement for grazing lambs.
