A Norwegian SME is involved in design and manufacturing of a wide range of wrought iron products. These products and processes are based on old Norwegian traditions, and require a lot of time-consuming handwork. During the last few years parts of this work has been more and more industrialised due to the high level of costs. With reference to the company strategy the SMS wishes, or needs, to improve the manufacturing processes as well as the productivity further more. Presently they are looking for new processes for the production of components to door handles, especially the manufacturing of the twist rod holding an eccentric square hole. Each door handle has two twist rods, a so-called "he" and "she". Each of these again has in an early stage of production an eccentric square hole of 8x8 mm to be made, which is difficult and costly because of production in many steps.
Ideally the company wants to complete the manufacturing of the twist rod in one claming, i.e. in a CNC-lathe (Computer Numerical Control) directly form standard rod iron. The twist rod itself has a diameter of 18 mm and a length of 60 mm. The eccentric square hole can be on the whole length, but more perfectly is to a depth of approx. 40-45 mm.
A square rod irons which fit into the square hole is welded to one twist rod (the "he"), and the other (the "she") is connected with a small through bolt (the door is between). The different handles themselves - of wrought iron - are welded to the twist rods. This gives a wide variation of different models of door handles. The number of twist rods is at time 20.000 yearly. The material is ordinary black iron.
